It’s time for another WNBA Trivia Challenge! A’ja Wilson is having a pretty good season (read: a season for the ages), New York’s on a roll, and this year’s All-Stars were announced - below, you’ll find questions about each of these topics and more. If you’re traveling somewhere today, maybe this will help pass the time during your traffic-filled adventure - just don’t trivia and drive, please.
And as always, just a friendly reminder that Substack doesn’t have the functionality to display the correct answer after you respond (the checkmark simply denotes which option you chose), so you’ll have to scroll to the bottom to discover the correct answers. Good luck and hope you all have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
Question 1. Let’s start with a pair of questions about the WNBA All-Star game. Caitlin Clark topped the fan voting, tallying over 700,000 votes. Who finished second in the fan voting?
Question 2. Technically speaking, I lied when I said I had a pair of questions about the WNBA All-Star Game. That’s because the next question relates to an event not officially categorized as an All-Star Game by the WNBA. The year was 2004 and, given it was an Olympic year, the event saw Team USA face a team of WNBA stars. At what unusual venue did this event take place?
Question 3. Let’s return to the present day. A’ja Wilson is compiling one of the greatest individual seasons in WNBA history. She leads the league in scoring. In fact, if the season ended today, she would break Diana Taurasi’s single-season points per game record. Wilson also ranks second in rebounds per game and blocks per contest. What three-time MVP is the only player in WNBA history to finish a season in the league’s top two in average points, rebounds, and blocks?
Question 4. In the words of Sanka Coffie, I’m feeling very Olympic today. So let’s tackle a question about the Olympics. Who is the only head coach to lead Team USA to a gold medal in multiple Olympic years?
Question 5. The New York Liberty is the hottest team in the W, racking up a league-best 17-3 record through its first half of the season. How many games can the Liberty afford to lose over the remainder of their 20 regular season games if they want to break the 1998 Houston Comets’ league record for regular season winning percentage?
Question 6. There have been two triple-doubles this season. You’ll be shocked to learn that Alyssa Thomas owns one of those games, accomplishing the feat on opening night against Indiana. Who is the other player with a triple-double this season?
Question 7. This one’s a bit random. If you’ve watched WNBA games this season, you’ve undoubtedly seen the league’s “Welcome to the W” commercial. Pictured below and billed as the VP of Layup Logistics, what is the name of the character who narrates this advertisement?
