Back in September, we published an early list of upcoming WNBA free agents and their various different statuses. This was based on sourced contract information and an understanding of the Collective Bargaining Agreement that governs how truly ‘free’ a WNBA player is when their contract runs out. Now it’s time for that all to become a reality.
Over the first 14 days of January, teams had to send out qualifying offers in order to officially make certain players restricted, reserved, or - in a few special cases - cored. For more detailed explanations of the categories below, please refer to the initial article and our CBA FAQ. In short, Unrestricted Free Agents can talk to and sign with anyone they want; Restricted Free Agents can also do that, but their previous team has the right to match any offer sheet they sign to retain them; Reserved and ‘Suspended-Contract Expired’ players can only negotiate and sign with their previous team.
Cored Players, similar to reserved, can only negotiate and sign with their previous team - but the designation comes with a one-year, guaranteed, supermax contract offer (this year $221,450). The team and player can negotiate a deal for more years and/or for a lower number, if they wish. Or as we saw last year with Skylar Diggins-Smith, the player can refuse to sign and push for a trade, often to a specific chosen destination.
The list below will be consistently updated as contracts are signed over the course of free agency, although don’t expect a deluge just yet. Teams and players are allowed to start talking as of January 15, but can’t sign new contracts until February 1 at the earliest. The signings we’ve seen already, and the only kind that can happen before February, were players accepting their qualifying offers.
