To get you prepared for the NCAA Tournament, we dug into the numbers and are bringing you one stat for each of the 68 teams in the 2022 NCAA Tournament field! We have broken the teams up by seed lines and ordered each line alphabetically. All stats include games against Division I teams only.
No. 1 Seeds
Louisville - The Cardinals are one of 10 teams in Division I with a steal rate and a block rate both over 11.5%. The only other major conference schools to be doing so are Northwestern and UConn.
NC State - Despite facing the country’s 12th toughest schedule by opponent winning percentage, NC State has outscored its opponents by 19.3 points per game, the nation’s fourth-highest margin of victory.
South Carolina - South Carolina has an offensive rebounding rate of 45.3% to lead the country. They also have a defensive rebounding rate of 74.9%. The only other teams in our database (since 2009-10) with an offensive rebounding rate over 45% and a defensive rebounding rate over 74% are Baylor in 2016-17 and Baylor in 2020-21.
Stanford - Cameron Brink is the only player in the country to average at least 24 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks per 40 minutes this season (minimum 200 minutes). The last player to finish a season with these numbers was A’ja Wilson (2017-18).
No. 2 Seeds
Baylor - Baylor takes 27.2% of its shots from three, which ranks 205th in the country but is still their highest mark by a wide margin since at least 2009-10. They’ve nearly doubled their rate of 14.1% from last season.
Iowa - Caitlin Clark currently leads the country in scoring (27.4 PPG) and assists (7.9 APG). No player in Division I history has finished as the nation’s leader in points and assists per game (since 1985-86 when the NCAA first officially tracked assists).
Texas - The Texas defense causes opposing offenses to work really hard, and the Longhorns have held opponents to a 0.48 assist-to-turnover ratio. Since 2013-14, the only other major conference teams to hold opponents below 0.50 are Mississippi State (four times), UConn (two times), and Baylor (once).
UConn - Olivia Nelson-Ododa is averaging 9.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.8 blocks per game. She is the only player in the country averaging at least seven rebounds, three assists, and 1.5 blocks per game.
No. 3 Seeds
Iowa State - Iowa State ranks second in the nation in 3-point percentage (38.6%) and makes the second-most threes per game (10.4). If they finish the season at these numbers, they will be the fifth team since 2009-10 to shoot better than 38% from three on more than 10 makes per game.
Indiana - Indiana excels at limiting chances and free points for their opponents, ranking 41st in turnover rate (16.1% of possessions end in a turnover), 36th in defensive rebounding rate (rebound 73.7% of opponents’ missed shots), and 44th in opponent free-throw trips per game (6.3).
LSU - LSU is one of the best teams in the country at generating extra scoring attempts and limiting opponents’ chances. No other team this season has posted an offensive rebounding rate over 35%, a defensive rebounding rate over 74.5%, and a turnover rate below 16%.
Michigan - Naz Hillmon combines high volume with high efficiency. She is fifth in the country in scoring efficiency (1.02 points per play) among players with a usage rate over 30%, meaning they finish over 30% of their team’s plays with a shot, free-throw, or turnover (minimum 200 FGA).
No. 4 Seeds
Arizona - Arizona ranks in the top 15 in steal rate (13.5%) and the top 40 in block rate (11.1%) for the third season in a row. No other team has recorded at least a 12% steal rate and 10% block rate in each of the past three seasons.
Maryland - Angel Reese is one of just four major conference players to average at least 15 points, 10 rebounds, one steal, and one block per game. The others are Aneesah Morrow, Ayoka Lee, and Aliyah Boston. (something something A’s all-around)
Oklahoma - A hallmark of Jennie Baranczyk offenses, Oklahoma’s assisted shot rate has jumped from 52.5% (208th nationally) to 65.2% (14th). That increase (12.7 percentage points) is the fourth-highest increase this season behind Vanderbilt (15.5 percentage points), Creighton (13.5 percentage points), and Mississippi Valley State (12.8 percentage points).
Tennessee - Tamari Key ranks second in the nation with 3.7 blocks per game, which would be her third season in a row ranking in the top-15 nationally. Key is one of two players (Nancy Mulkey is the other) to block at least 2.75 shots each of the past three seasons.
No. 5 Seeds
Notre Dame - Olivia Miles is averaging 13.7 points, 7.2 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. Since 2009-10, no other freshman has averaged 10 points, five assists, five boards, and 1.5 steals.
Oregon - Three Oregon players average at least 13 points per contest this season: Endyia Rogers (14.9), Nyara Sabally (14.7), and Te-Hina Paopao (13.4). That is tied for the most such players in Division I.
UNC - North Carolina’s defense ranks ninth in the Her Hoop Stats Defensive Rating, which adjusts defensive efficiency based on the strength of opponents played. This is just one year after North Carolina ranked 87th in the country.
Virginia Tech - Elizabeth Kitley is the only player in the country averaging 17 points, nine boards, two blocks, and one or more steals per game. Since 2009-10, only 12 other major-conference players have averaged that line (Brittney Griner and Karisma Penn did it twice).
No. 6 Seeds
BYU - BYU sports one of the most efficient offenses in the country, averaging 77.8 points per game to rank eighth in the country. At the same time, the Cougars hold opponents to just 36.0% shooting from the floor, which is the 22nd lowest in the country.
Georgia - Georgia currently ranks third nationally with 6.1 blocks per game. This would be their fourth season in the last five seasons ranking in the top 10. It would also be their fourth season in that five-season window with 5.9 or more blocks per game, which is the second-most in the country (South Carolina, five times).
Kentucky - Kentucky is the only team in the country with two players averaging 16 points and seven rebounds per game (Rhyne Howard and Dre’una Edwards). No SEC team has accomplished this feat since the 2018-19 season when Mississippi State’s Teaira McCowan and Anriel Howard both reached those marks.
Ohio State - Ohio State is one of just two teams to shoot at least 50% on 2-pointers and 37.5% on 3-pointers this season (South Dakota State). Since 2009-10, that has only been accomplished three other times on at least 22 attempts per game from deep and 40 or more attempts from inside the arc per game.
No. 7 Seeds
Colorado - Colorado ranks 11th in the country in steal rate, with 13.6% of all opponents’ possessions ending in a steal. The Buffaloes have three players with a steal rate of at least 3.4% in 450 or more minutes played, which is tied for the most in the nation.
Ole Miss - Ole Miss has scored 67.5 percent of their points on twos this season. That’s the fourth-highest in the country. Despite the high volume of attempts inside, Ole Miss’ opponents are blocking only 4.7% of their 2-point attempts, the fifth-lowest (best) rate in the country.
Utah - Utah earns a trip to the line on 21.0% of its 2-point attempts. That’s the eighth-highest free throw rate in the country. Utah is also efficient at capitalizing on those opportunities, shooting 78.2% on free throws this season (12th in the country).
UCF - UCF holds opponents to just 0.62 points per play that ends in a shot, free-throw trip, or a turnover. That is the best in the country this season and the third-lowest since 2016-17, behind 2019-20 Baylor and 2020-21 Stephen F. Austin.
No. 8 Seeds
Kansas - Kansas has lost just nine games this season after losing 18 a year ago. That nine-game improvement is currently the best in the nation and will finish the season no worse than tied.
Miami - Ja’Leah Williams is one of just two freshmen to average 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and 2.5 steals per 40 minutes (minimum 850 minutes played).
Nebraska - Jaz Shelley is the only player in the country currently averaging 13 points, six boards, five assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. If you bring rebounds up to 6.4 and blocks up to 0.9 per game, only Gabby Wiliams in 2016-17 has matched that line.
Washington State - Washington State has held opponents to a respectable 60.3 points per game, which is even more impressive since their opponents’ average offensive efficiency ranks seventh in the country–their opponents averaged 96.6 points per 100 possessions throughout the season.
No. 9 Seeds
Georgia Tech - Lorela Cubaj is one of just two players this year (and the only major conference player) to average double-figure rebounds and 4+ assists. Since 2009-10, only five other players have recorded that line plus at least one block.
Gonzaga - Gonzaga rebounds 41.6% of their own misses, which ranks fourth in the country.
Kansas State - Kansas State ranks second in the nation with an assisted shot rate of 69.9%, thanks in large part to freshman Serena Sundell and her 34.3% assist rate which ranks second among freshmen with 150 or more assists.
USF - Bethy Mununga is averaging 10.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.1 blocks. Only three other players have that stat line this season, and only one of those three has more steals.
No. 10 Seeds
Arkansas - Only one team in the country turns the ball over less per possession than Arkansas, who is on pace to record their fifth-consecutive season with a turnover rate at or below 13.5%. No other team in the country has recorded more than two such seasons since Arkansas’ streak began.
Creighton - Creighton is averaging an impressive 1.12 points per scoring attempt, which ranks sixth in the country. That is higher than 89% of all qualified players in Division I.
Florida - Florida runs shooters off the 3-point line better than almost any team in the country—just 19.4% of opposing shots come from behind the arc. That is the lowest rate in Division I, and when teams do shoot from deep against the Gators they make just 29% of attempts, which is 85th in the country.
South Dakota - South Dakota has a very efficient offense and a stifling defense, they are one of only five teams with a points per play of at least 0.89 and a points allowed per play of 0.71 or less.
No. 11 Seeds
Dayton - Araion Bradshaw is mostly a facilitator and ranks in the top 3% of the country in assists per game at 4.1, but she also gets to the line on over 40% of her 2-point scoring attempts which ranks 15th in Division I.
DePaul - Aneesah Morrow leads the country in double-doubles with 28, which is the most by a freshman since at least 2009-10.
Florida State - 11 different players have started for Florida State this season, and nine of the 11 are averaging at least 5.3 points per game.
Missouri State - Missouri State has excelled at generating extra possessions off steals and offensive rebounds, while limiting their own turnovers, to overcome below-average shooting numbers. They are the only team with a steal rate above 11.5%, an offensive rebounding rate over 37%, and a turnover rate below 16%.
Princeton - Princeton’s defense is one of the best in the country, holding opponents to 34.9% field goal shooting (7th in Division I), 8.5 assists per game (1st), and 50.9 points per game (3rd).
Villanova - Maddy Siegrist is the second-leading scorer in Division I at 25.9 points per game to go along with 9.5 rebounds per game. Since 2009-10, the only other players to reach those numbers are Alysha Clark, Elena Delle Donne, Megan Gustafson, and Chiney Ogwumike.
No. 12 Seeds
Belmont - Belmont is one of two teams in the country with three players recording an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.60 on 85 or more assists: Jamilyn Kinney (2.66, 85), Tuti Jones (2.02, 91), and Destinee Wells (1.65, 129).
FGCU - FGCU has recorded no more than nine losses in each of the 13 seasons in our database (2009-10 to present). Only UConn can say the same.
Stephen F. Austin - Stephen F. Austin currently ranks second in the country in opponent points per play at 0.64. This would be the second season in a row that SFA finishes in the top two of the stat.
UMass - Sam Breen is one of just two players this season averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, and is the only player also averaging at least 0.5 blocks per game.
No. 13 Seeds
Buffalo - Dyaisha Fair is the only player in the country to average 23 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Fair also hit those marks last season as only a sophomore. No other player has recorded more than one such season since 2009-10.
Delaware - Jasmine Dickey scored 52 points earlier this season against College of Charleston and 48 against Eastern Michigan, making her one of just three Division I players with multiple games of 48 or more points since 2009-10.
IUPUI - Macee Williams is one of the most efficient scorers and rebounders in the country. Her 1.33 points per scoring attempt ranks 13th in the country and ranks fifth among players averaging at least 15 points per game. On the glass, Williams ranks 15th in defensive rebounding rate and 82nd in offensive rebounding rate. Only four other players rank that highly in both while playing at least 500 minutes.
UNLV - UNLV ranks 19th in the country in 3-point percentage this season at 35.8%. Four players are averaging at least one made 3-pointer per game: Alyssa Durazo-Frescas (1.9), Essence Booker (1.3), Justice Ethridge (1.1), and Khayla Rooks (1.1).
No. 14 Seeds
American - Opponents shoot just 24.3% from 3-point range against American, which is the third-lowest in Division I.
Charlotte - Charlotte holds opponents to just 24.4% on shots from behind the arc, which ranks fourth nationally, and 40.1% on 2-pointers, which is the 36th in the country.
Jackson State - Ameshya Williams is the only player in the country averaging at least 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game.
UT Arlington - Starr Jacobs is the only player in the country to average at least 20 points, five boards, two steals, 0.5 blocks, and less than two fouls per game.
No. 15 Seeds
Fairfield - Fairfield ranks 16th in the country in turnover rate at just 15.1% of possessions ending in a turnover. The Stags also rank 17th in foul rate at 16.2%.
Hawai’i - Hawai’i gets to the free-throw line more often than any team in the country, getting to the line on 23.1% of all 2-point scoring attempts (shots plus times fouled shooting).
Illinois State - Katie Bullman recorded the only game this season where a player recorded 15 points, 13 rebounds, six blocks, and three steals.
Mercer - Mercer manages to avoid getting their shots blocked–their 4.0% shot blocked against rate is the lowest (best) in the nation–despite shooting a higher percentage of their shots from 2-point range than all but seven teams in the country.
No. 16 Seeds
Albany - Albany plays at the slowest pace in the country at 62.7 possessions per 40 minutes. Shortening the game, especially when a team can make 3-pointers at a decent rate (32.4% from behind the arc) certainly increases the odds of a major upset.
Howard - Howard gets to the line an average of 10.6 times per game, which ranks fifth in the nation. This is the fifth season in a row that they rank in the top five.
Longwood - Longwood forces 19.1 turnovers per game, which ranks 31st in the country.
Montana State - Montana State is one of the most efficient teams from the free-throw stripe, making 77.3% of their attempts to rank 17th nationally.
Mount St. Mary’s - Mount St. Mary’s is shooting 35.2% from behind the arc, which ranks 28th in the country.
UIW - UIW turns over their opponents on 21.5% of possessions, which ranks 68th in the nation.
