This week on the Her Hoop Stats Podcast, John Liddle talked with Arkansas head coach Mike Neighbors about the effect of not getting a Selection Monday, misinformation in recruiting, and much more.
We’ve decided to share some of the highlights from the interview here, but you can listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Episode Highlights
Coach Neighbors on how he would have liked the NCAA to implement some sort of Selection Show:
I didn't want a bracket. I didn't want people to say where we would have gone. Just to just announce the teams that the committee would have considered locks. Teams that had won their conference tournaments. Teams whose body of work would have put them on the board with no debate.
I want [that recognition] for our kids, but we're going to give that to them. We're gonna put it on a banner. I don't know whether they're gonna let us display it or not, but we're gonna have it on a banner somewhere, that this team was an NCAA Tournament team. Maybe it has an asterisk on it, I don't know.
On misinformation on the recruiting trail:
Some of the questions I've had to answer point-blank from parents and from players who will say, “Well, this coach at this school said this.” And you believed it? Did you research it? Well, let me research for you and I'll show the evidence.
I've stood up in some of our meetings at the NCAA Tournament and said it should be an NCAA violation if a kid can prove they were lied to. If they can prove that somebody lied to them, then that kid ought to be able to transfer without penalty. And there ought to be a violation. It ought to be the greatest violation that we have.
