Thanksgiving tournaments always bring an exciting slate of early season games, and this year is no exception. Four tournaments in particular stand out as having fields that could generate some intriguing games.
The Battle 4 Atlantis, which tips off today in the Bahamas, features three top-15 teams: Texas, Louisville and Tennessee. While those three may be the favorites to reach the championship, UCLA, South Dakota State and Gonzaga, all of whom are receiving votes in the AP poll, should generate some intriguing matchups. It wouldn’t be surprising to see an upset or two on Paradise Island.
Next up, this year marks the addition of women’s games to the Phil Knight tournament spread in Portland, Oregon over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Phil Knight Legacy bracket is highlighted by a potential championship matchup between UConn and Iowa. The Phil Knight Invitational bracket features three ranked teams in Iowa State, North Carolina and Oregon.
And while less top-heavy than the other three tournaments, the Gulf Coast Showcase features a deep group of competitive teams. The field is highlighted by Baylor, Michigan and Villanova - all of which are currently ranked in the bottom half of the AP poll. Matchups between those teams, as well as Belmont and South Florida, both of whom are receiving votes, should also be interesting.
Megan Gauer and Calvin Wetzel discussed all four of these tournaments in more detail on our latest Her Hoop Stats Unplugged episode.
