Roll and replace is an action out of a basic pick-and-roll. In this video, we break down how California Baptist used it to take a late lead against UC San Diego and ultimately win the game.
The key added component in this action is the “replace” part. A third player, typically a shooter, starts the play down on the block. When the screener rolls down towards that area, the shooter lifts up to the perimeter, replacing the roller on the outside.
This takes a potential help defender out of the picture by forcing her to follow the shooter to the 3-point line. If she doesn’t, rather than pass to the roller, the point guard can hit the shooter for an open 3. If the defender sticks with the shooter, the roller should have an isolation opportunity on the post.
This also works best with two other shooters in the corners. If their defenders help off to stop the postup, there’s an opportunity for an open shot there as well.
