Named for the Spanish national team that regularly utilized it during the 2016 Olympics, a Spain screen, or Spain pick-and-roll, is basically a regular pick-and-roll with one extra piece. The screener receives a back screen on the roll in an attempt to free them up for an open layup.
The player setting the back screen can then pop out to the perimeter, much like a pick-and-pop action, so that if their defender takes away the roll the ball handler can kick out for an uncontested three.
This action works best with a good passer running the point, an athletic finishing big setting the initial screen, and a shooter setting the back screen. It’s extremely difficult to defend, as it involves a high level of communication and teamwork in order to take away all three players.
