Five WNBA offseason moves I want to see
As mentioned yesterday, the first major domino of the WNBA offseason fell over the weekend with a reported trade involving Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum and the No. 2 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. For one reason or another, no one has made me GM of every WNBA team yet, but that doesn’t prevent me from having a wishlist for the rest of the offseason.
Seattle Storm trade for Satou and Nyara Sabally
Satou Sabally has made her intent to leave the Dallas Wings clear, but it’ll require a trade after the Wings designated “the Unicorn” as a core player earlier in the offseason. There’s naturally been speculation about Sabally reuniting with her sister, former Oregon teammate and 2024 WNBA Finals Game 5 star Nyara Sabally, in New York, but I’ve got a different idea. I’d like to see the sisters land with the Seattle Storm. Seattle’s as close as they can get to their one-time home in Oregon in the WNBA and, I think, is a better place for both of them to showcase their skills in 2025 than with the loaded Liberty.
After missing the first half of the 2024 season recovering from shoulder surgery, two-time All-Star and 2023 first-team All-WNBA selection Satou could use this season to showcase her ability to be a franchise centerpiece ahead of 2026 free agency, something she’d struggle to accomplish with the loaded Liberty. Nyara will struggle to earn minutes in New York as long as 2024 WNBA Finals MVP Jonquel Jones and two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart occupy the frontcourt.
