Our team-by-team series looking forward to the upcoming WNBA offseason and 2025 continues with the latest team eliminated from playoff contention, the Dallas Wings
Another excellent article. Since Greg Bibb won't fire himself, Trammell is an easy sacrifice. I can't see Howard staying when she can get the same money, or very close, from a good team. The wasted pick of Jacy Sheldon will haunt this team for a long time unless they get lucky and land Bueckers. I'm guessing Sabally won't prioritize the W if the Wings remain crummy, but you never know. If they had Angel Reese instead of Sheldon, the picture would be prettier.
Jacy isn't a wasted pick. She is a good all around player. The issue is the overall roster. Too many centers, too many small forwards, no starting point guard.
They can keep Sheldon and start a rebuild by trading Sabally( drafting any of the power forwards that fall to them), trading at least 1 of their centers so that can see what they have in Soares, let Howard walk, develop MS and LLS at sf. Sign a veteran point guard to run the offense. If she falls to them with the Sabally pick, draft and stash Malonga.
Sheldon seems to me like a nice rotation player who conceivably could become a second-division starter -- which is fine. But she doesn't appear to be a point guard, nor is she a particularly good defender. Her on-off court numbers are bad and her PER is too. But she's a rookie in a bad situation, so there's hope. But picking her instead of Reese, or even Aliyah Edwards, with Howard 33 and a free agent? Makes no sense.
Richard, thank you again for your thorough analysis. I shall say it bluntly, this team is a disaster. Maddy Siegrist would excel with just about any other team - she's a great talent, but when you are on a team with a ball hog who everyone stands and watches, it affects the cohesiveness of play. And as a UConn fan, I feel for Lou Lopez-Senechal who is not even given a chance. I pray and pray that LA gets the 1st pick because Paige would suffer on that team. My prediction once the season ends - Latricia Trammell is dismissed.
Hi Richard. I'm feeling kinda clueless here. I've thought of Jacy as a point guard. Can you elaborate on your comment? Is it about her not being a WNBA-level point guard, or that she doesn't belong in the position?
Richard: Thorough and readable summary, as per usual.
As Clay inferred, I think a lot of this is o GM Greg Bibb? He's churned through coaches so firing Trammel would fall under the "rinse and repeat" cycle. While Bibb seems to always have Dallas getting and using draft picks, he uses them in strange ways and doesn't seem to have a lot of patience with them.
The best example of lack of patience, of course, is with his point guards. Ty Harris was traded and Veronica Burton cut, but that didn't seem to bother the Connecticut Sun. How often has he over-drafted at one position only to get minimal value from one or all of them? So, while he got a bundle of draft capital for Marina Mabrey, one can't be optimistic he'll use it the right way...unless he gets very lucky and lands the #1 pick.
Given that the Wings will be moving into Dallas, there are expansion teams coming in and a new CBA after next season, would Dallas ownership want to cut the head off the wing? Interested in your take.

there are plenty of power fowards in this draft. many are better overall than edwards or reese. they honestly need a vet pg until leite is ready.
