HOPEWELL, N.J. (Jan. 27, 2020) — Her Hoop Stats is proud to announce that Becky Hammon (Colorado State, 1995-99) has graciously agreed to be the namesake for our Mid-Major Player of the Year Award. The Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award is the first of its kind and recognizes excellent players in any of the 25 mid-major conferences.
“I think it’s awesome to recognize players who maybe don’t have the glitz and glamour or privilege of being on national TV, but are doing great things on their journey through college hoops,” said Coach Hammon about the award.
Hammon was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999, the program’s only appearance to this day. The guard finished her collegiate career as Colorado State’s all-time leader in points, field goals, 3-pointers, free throws, and steals.
Hammon was signed by the New York Liberty in 1999 after going undrafted. She quickly became a fan favorite for her tenacity on the court and earned a starting spot in 2004. In 2007, Hammon was traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars, where she earned the nickname Big Shot Becky. She averaged more than 15 points per game in each of her first five seasons with the Silver Stars, the five highest scoring averages of her career.
Hammon retired in 2014 as a six-time All-Star and a two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree, and she was named one of the top 20 players in WNBA history in 2016. Hammon is in the Liberty’s Ring of Honor, and her No. 25 is retired by Colorado State and the San Antonio Stars.
While recovering from an injury as a member of the Stars, Hammon began to take part in practices, coaches’ meetings with the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs hired Hammon to an assistant coaching role after her 2014 retirement, making her the second female coach in NBA history. Additionally, Hammon is the only woman to be a head coach in the NBA Summer League as well as the only woman to be a member of an NBA All-Star coaching staff.
Her Hoop Stats released the 15-player mid-season watch list, which is also shown below, in early January and will announce the 10 semifinalists for the award on Monday, February 3.
