March was a month we had been anticipating here at Her Hoop Stats for quite a while. We were looking forward to the reveal of travel details, stomach-churning moments, shocking results, and discussing the news of the day. Instead of the usual anxious moments we’ve come to expect, March 2020 has brought us that tension but in a very different way.
The coronavirus has put us in an unprecedented situation in women’s basketball and in the world at large. At Her Hoop Stats, our mission is to unlock better insight about the women’s game. We will continue to do that in all the ways we have in the past.
Where we can, we’ll provide facts and perspective on the impact of COVID-19 based on our original reporting. More often, we will continue with our standard coverage, whether that’s looking ahead to a WNBA season that we hope will be played this summer to reviewing the events of the NCAA season to date and the people that make it happen in addition to our podcast and stats site.
Of course, we’re more than just fans. We’re all a part of the women’s basketball community. Normally, we’re contemplating upcoming games, spectacular highlights, and the all-around excellence we’re privileged to witness. This week, our focus has been the health of everyone from the young girls learning the game to the, well, less-young coaches teaching them.
Rather than strategies to cover the pick and roll, we’ve been thinking about strategies to “flatten the curve”. We know we’re not medical professionals, but we can encourage all of us to take the common-sense precautions recommended by health authorities. We’re also on the lookout for stats and information that we think are relevant to our community and will share those with you on social media. Here are a few pieces of data that keep us optimistic in these difficult times:
Not everyone who interacts with an infected person will catch it.
Most of the people who catch it will be fine in the long run.
Women’s basketball has been overcoming challenges from the start and is destined for even more greatness in the future. We’re in this journey together and tomorrow will be our next step forward. Thanks for letting us be a part of it.
